Why I am drawn to Eckerd
Eckerd College has captured my interest for so many reasons, each rooted in my passions, goals, and personal learning style. I believe it’s the perfect environment for me to grow both academically and personally, and I’m eager to bring my unique perspective and enthusiasm to Eckerd’s community.
As someone passionate about Marine Biology, I’m thrilled by the depth of Eckerd’s natural science offerings. I plan to explore this field intensively, so knowing I’d be part of the Natural Sciences Collegium after my freshman year is exciting. The specialized courses available like Biological Oceanography, Marine Mammalogy, Coral Reefs, Elasmobranch Biology, and even Python for Biology, make Eckerd a rare gem. These classes speak directly to my interests and offer the hands-on experiences I need to become a well-rounded marine biologist. I’m eager to work closely with professors who are experts in their fields and have the chance to learn from their research and insights. I already have questions I can’t wait to discuss, and Eckerd’s emphasis on direct engagement with faculty is invaluable.
The close-knit, supportive community at Eckerd is equally appealing to me. My high school is similarly small, with about 500 students, and I’ve found such an environment fosters genuine connections, where everyone is seen and supported. I thrive in settings where collaboration and individual growth are emphasized, and the size of Eckerd’s campus community feels like a natural fit. I also identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community and am neurodivergent, and from my conversation with Eckerd admissions, I’m confident it’s a welcoming, inclusive space where I can be myself without hesitation.
Eckerd’s commitment to sustainability aligns closely with my own values. As someone deeply concerned with environmental issues, it’s heartening to see that Eckerd has embraced eco-friendly initiatives and encourages students to engage with sustainable practices. It’s inspiring to know I’d be in a community that prioritizes the health of our planet, and I’m eager to contribute to that mission.
The hands-on learning approach at Eckerd also speaks to my learning style. I retain knowledge best through experience and active engagement, and Eckerd’s philosophy of learning by doing will help me thrive. The 3-week Autumn Term that Eckerd offers is another feature that excites me. Have this dedicated period to adjust to college life seems invaluable and would help me ease into the academic and social aspects of college. This thoughtful structure demonstrates how much Eckerd cares about its students' well-being and success and that was a crucial aspect I looked at when researching schools.
Another reason I’m drawn to Eckerd is its warm climate. I’ve received numerous letters from Eckerd highlighting the warm weather, which only adds to the appeal, especially since I’m not a fan of the cold. Additionally, the “Keep Eckerd Weird” slogan resonates with me; I think of myself as weird in the best ways, and Eckerd feels like a place that celebrates individuality and creativity. The students I’ve met from Eckerd all seem friendly, interesting, and driven, and I’d love to be part of a community where people bring their unique perspectives to everything they do.
Lastly, one of the most personal reasons I feel Eckerd is the right place for me is that it’s one of the few colleges where I’d have the chance to bring my cat, Pumpkin. He’s been with me since freshman year, and he’s truly one of my best friends. The opportunity to bring him to campus after my first semester makes Eckerd feel like home before I’ve even arrived.
Eckerd offers everything I’m looking for and more: a supportive community, top-notch programs for Marine Biology, a dedication to environmental sustainability, and a culture that values individual growth and creativity. I’m excited about the prospect of learning, growing, and contributing to such an inspiring place, and I’m ready to make the most of every opportunity Eckerd has to offer.
